From quite a young age, I have recognized my interest in pursuing a career in medicine. I was fortunate enough to have parents that worked in a hospital setting – a point of access into the field of study that captivated my younger self. Within this writing class, I have been given the opportunity to examine specific topics related to this field, further developing my passion for medicine. Within the first piece of required writing, our “Position Paper”, I focused on Asthma and Asthma-related healthcare outcomes. In the process of constructing this paper, I was required to synthesize information from primary sources such as journals and articles and combine such sources with my own thoughts and opinions. Through this practice, I used my comprehension of reading materials to form a basis of understanding, from which I could draw an educated opinion and defend it within my paper. Altogether I found constructing my position paper to be extremely beneficial as it allowed me to explore a medical related topic and formulate my own stance on a particular health issue.
Another Aspect of this writing class that I found to be extremely beneficial had been the interview with a professional in the research/medical field. I felt as though being required to seek out the guidance of a professional I a field of our own interest was an effective way to gain further insight into that particular field as well as establish connections with someone with a high level of knowledge and interest. This exercise tested our verbal communication skills as well as our abilities to formulate q questions that would translate well into a scientific paper. In my interview with Dr. Sonia Go Perez, a retired Obstetrician-Gynecologist, I found her experience and interest in her field to be quite inspiring and enlightening as she was able to bring a multi-faceted approach towards healthcare.
Moreover, I found this class to be extremely helpful as I developed a more concise and meaningful style of writing and learned to organize and express my ideas more effectively in a sophisticated manner.
